Paint-a-Thon: Builders & Friends Rally for Day of Service
Paint can be a powerful thing. It can transform rooms entirely, change the way light plays in certain environments and cover up exterior blemishes to where it would be hard to know they ever existed. Beyond looking good, quality exterior paint also serves a role in protecting and preserving an important asset - our homes.
It’s why we were excited for our project with House of Refuge, a community in the East Valley offering transitional housing for families experiencing homelessness. The community of 88 single-family homes, situated on the former Williams Air Force Base, provides wrap-around services for families with the goal of ultimately moving them to a more stable housing solution.
“House of Refuge plays an important role in the community,” said Chris Cady, HomeAid Phoenix’s board president and division president at The New Home Company. “We hope this is just the beginning of a longer term partnership.”
While we hope to work with House of Refuge on additional, more involved projects in the future, this first project — a Paint-A-Thon held last month — was a colorful jumping off point. And the response from the Valley’s homebuilding community throughout couldn’t have been more enthusiastic.
What we did: Painted 13 homes in one day
When we did it: November 2021
How we did it: With the help of nearly 200 volunteers from 15 companies
What we used: 400 gallons of paint donated by Sherwin Williams
To accomplish this one-day feat, companies recruited teams of volunteers to adopt a home at House of Refuge. Each team prepped the exterior of their home, completed any minor repairs, applied a coat of primer and then polished off the project with two coats of paint.
In the end, thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and support from our generous supporters, more than a dozen homes have a fresh, new, well-deserved look.
The Paint-a-Thon was so successful that planning is already underway for 2022!
